Scripture Study

"That Sam-I-am!
That Sam-I-am!
I do not like that Sam-I-am!

Do you like green eggs and ham?
I do not like them, Sam-I-am
I do not like green eggs and ham.

You do not like them.
So you say.
Try them!  Try them!
Any you may.
Try them and you may, I say.

Sam!
If you will let me be,
I will try them.
You will see.

Say!
I like green eggs and ham!
I do!  I like them Sam-I-am!"

-Dr. Suess's Green Eggs and  Ham

In 2nd Nephi 32:3, we read "...feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do."

In Green Eggs and Ham Sam has tasted the green eggs and ham and knows how delicious they are.   He is very persistent in attempting to get the who who has no name to taste them, but the who has already made up his mind that he doesn’t like the green eggs and ham, even though he hasn’t tasted them. Sam wants his friend to try the green eggs and ham because he knows they will bring him happiness.  In order for us to truly know Christ, we must feast on the green eggs and ham by studying the scriptures daily.

President Spencer W. Kimball in How Rare a Possession states:  "Each of us, at some time in our lives, must discover the scriptures for ourselves – and not just discover them once, but rediscover them again and again.”

“Eat them, eat them, here they are.”  says Sam.  Let us all work to "feast upon the words of Christ" to find direction in our own lives and to come to know our Savior.

IDEAS FOR SCRIPTURE STUDY
  • The traditional approach: read the scriptures straight through.
  • After reading an article in the Ensign or other church magazine, read the scriptures listed related to that article.
  • Choose a topic from the topical guide or Bible dictionary, one with which you are struggling, one you would like to learn more about, or one at random, and study the scriptures listed.
  • Flip through your scriptures and read a scripture that you have marked and any notes you made.  Think about why you marked it and what it means to you.
  • Read the children versions of the standard works with your kids.
  • Listen to scriptures on CD in your car as you drive.
  • Study the scriptures related to an upcoming lesson for Sunday School or Relief Society.
